Zauberwald – On30 – Axel Klozenbuecher

During the early years of the 20th Century numerous narrow gauge feeder lines were constructed in the rural areas of the state of Brandenburg surrounding Berlin.
The Spreewaldbahn was constructed to metre gauge , whilst the remaining networks, most quite substantial were to 750 mm gauge.
They carried passengers to work, school, market, and local health resorts. Freight traffic consisted mainly of local agricultural products, timber, coal, and building materials
The ravages of war, dismantling, reparations, neglect and eventual competition from road transport sealed the fate of these Kleinbahnen. The last passenger train operated on the Prignitzer Kleinbahn in 1969, the final freight trains two years later.
The locomotives are partly modified Fleischmann Magic Train items and also several scratch-built locos and one scratch-built railcar.
The buildings are partly scratch or kit built for the O Gauge area. Eulendorf village in the background consists of plastic kits from Kibri and Vollmer.
Since coming into our ownership we are also adding some of the typical Spreewald features such as canals and barges which were used to deliver agricultural goods to the big cities. The area is since 1991 a Unesco World heritage site and is visited by a great number of visitors.
We have included some information about the area in a display adjacent to the layout.
